The Rockstar Energy Open closed out its first night on Friday with the Women’s Street Semifinal, in two heats of skaters including the four skaters who earned their way in through the VQS Qualifier earlier in the day.

Japan’s Miyu Ito led with a commanding performance, posting the three highest scores of the Semifinal—82.20 in Run 1, 84.80 in Run 2, 87.33 in Run 3—and ultimately leading the field by an astounding 11.17 points.

FORMAT: 13 skaters in 2 heats, best of 3 45-second run counts, top 8 advance to Final.

Pamela Rosa.

“I'm so happy I was able to finish every run, and with each run I was building, adding new tricks and improving my score,” Ito said after the contest, with a translation assist from Emiko Sugiyama.

Aoi Uemura.

Taking the top spot in the Semifinal gives Ito a strategic advantage: She’ll be the last skater to drop in the Final start order, giving her an opportunity to respond as other skaters take each run. Not that she’ll need it: “I'm not going to worry about other people, I'm just going to do my best,” Ito said.

Georgia Martin.

It’s already been a breakthrough year for Ito, who won Street and and took 2nd in Street Best Trick at X Games Ventura in June, and won the Pool Drop event in Munich, Germany earlier this month.

Her secret to success? Hard work.

Secret Lynn.

“Everyday practice gives me confidence to compete and to win,” Ito said.

In the other big story of the day, 11-year-old Mei Ozeki (who won the VQS Qualifier) in the morning, made it through to the Final, finishing just on the right side of the top-8 cut.

It’s the promise of the Rockstar Energy Open, fulfilled on day one: Film some clips, submit a video, and—boom!—you’re in. Ozeki said earlier in the day that it was her dream to skate in a contest with personal hero Mariah Duran, who also made the cut for Sunday’s final.
