Shop Challenge Photos + Highlights | RSEO 2024
The Rockstar Energy Open kicked off Saturday’s action with a Shop Challenge event on both the Street and Park courses. Featuring five shops that collectively represent the backbone of the Pacific Northwest skate industry, the Shop Challenge gives some top local skaters a chance to throw down on the pro courses and shine in front of the home crowd.
With packed bleachers at 11am, the local shop skaters started things off on full blast.

FORMAT: Five shops. Each shop enters 2 park and 2 street skaters. One heat per discipline, two :30-second runs each skater. Best run per SHOP counts from each discipline, best combined street and park scores decides overall challenge rankings.
Alex Lobasyuk took the top spot on the Street course, representing Portland’s Tactics shop, followed by Nels Rosen from The Method in Tacoma, Washington and Trevor Ward from Cal Skate in Portland.
“Honestly, this is probably the best time I’ve ever had in my life,” said Nels, aka Gnarls, who also skated in Friday’s VQS Qualifier. “I’m a little bit tired and I have a bit of a cold but I’m okay. This place is awesome. The shop contest is not as scary as the VQS was, but when I get nervous like that I use it to push my skating.”

Meeting everyone out here is awesome,” continued Gnarls. “I met Willy Santos, all the pros like Cordano Russell and so many more.” When asked what he is looking forward to for the rest of the weekend, he said the pro Street Final to watch Cordano, his favorite skater right now.
“The experience has been great! We’re glad that the rain held off for today and we couldn’t have asked for a better outcome,” said Trevor, the local legend. “Thank you Rockstar Energy! Being invited to skate this was a big surprise.”
Another PDX legend joined the Shop Challenge, Sebo Walker missed the practice session so he took a super casual run. Smart move from the veteran who had the pro Street Semifinal following a few hours later.
Max Clark took the stop spot on the Park course and secured the overall points win for Cal Skate, followed by Quintin Lavelle and Jamie Jacobson from the Substunce shop in Portland.

Though the morning didn’t go his way, Nick Peterson (who skated in the Park Semifinal and qualified for the Final on Sunday) was happy his team Cal Skate came out on top. “I’m exhausted,” laughed Nick. “There was a little less pressure today but I think the pressure helps me. It didn’t go the way I wanted today but it’s all good. I still had fun. Cal Skate baby! Now I’m going to go eat, chill and skate in the Final tomorrow.”

- Nels Rosen: Blunt kickflip to fakie, back Smith, kickflip front board on rail.
- Trevor Ward: Crunt slide (crail/blunt), back Smith on quarter, front noseblunt on quarterpipe.
- Bryan Krasovetz: Melon grab 360 down 3- block, front board on handrail.
PARK HIGHLIGHTS:
- Max Clark: Body jar, back tail, 5-0 grind extension, front blunt vert wall
- Quintin Laville: Madonna, invert, sugarcane
- Jamie Jacobson: Great Andrecht, melon grab, backside air
